seems to give a way to set up wifi hotspot option on your Dell...?

However - suggest you also read this article - as it confirms that Android (amongst others) does not support/allow ad-hoc mode...; but also appears to suggest a possible workaround?

Not sure what you mean by WiFi direct but that is not how you connect your phone to your computer to transfer files.

It will depend on which make of phone you have, not just the operating system. The way you would transfer files is through a USB cable connected between the phone and computer.

IE. In the case of a Samsung phone you would go to Samsung's website and download and install the Kies program. This will allow your device to show up as a drive in Windows Explorer and transfer files between the two devices.

Please post the make and model of your phone.

By wi-fi direct I am assuming the OP wants to connect via WI-fi without going through a wireless router. This is called an Ad-Hoc network. Using a router is an infrastructure network.

Whether you can use Ad-Hoc is dependant on the wi-fi hardware in your computer and phone. You might like to read some of the following articles.

mmm An ad hoc connection (presuming that is what the poster actually means) does sound a rather complicated way to do it; especially if both laptop and phone are in the same room/location? A usb connection would the easier, faster etc...?

mmm - Presuming StuartS is interpreting your CFH (Call For Help)... A trawl via google suggests it's not possibly with Android devices (yet)... But there are a few ideas out there that may work; and also this link seems to suggest possibly the viable way to go:

I found that link above via this google trawl; and suggest you have a look at the other hits it produced too. Possibly they may help resolve it.

Not entirely sure I understand why you want to go this path though; as bluetooth would allow transfers directly between a current laptop and phone?

Whether or not your Dell laptop allows what you want - have to look further into that and its specs..
