DNS Failed

March 18, 2009 at 13:49:23
Specs: Windows XP
Every Monday, we encounter cannot connect to network or access to internet. Under the Event viewer 2 error - 4004 and 4015 related to DNS. Previously we were have 2 servers - one is w2k another one w2003 server. Some IT guy remove the w2k, now we only run on w2003 server. When I open the DNS Server, it listed w2k and w2003, but the forward zone does not display any IP address. Error stated "The DNS Server encounter while attempting to locate the zone. The Transfer of zone from the Master server failed".
Can you help me, since I am running only 1 server, how could I stop the dns server to look for the Master ?
Should I uninstall the DNS Server and then re-install a new DNS Server ? or can I disable the DNS Server ?, could it because of DNS that cause the workstation cannot connect to the w2003 server and the internet access ?
I only have basic Network knowledge, the IT Guy already left, so I am seeking the expert to help me to solve this problem.

We don't know what the IT guy did. Did he run DCpromo to demote the server?

That might help. ^^

It's too late for that now. It would appear that not only did this "expert" not dcpromo down the w2k server but the w2k server was your primary dns server. This means your w3k server is secondary [readonly] but since it can't contact the primary dns server it has nothing to display.

Is the w2k server still on the premises?

If it is physically gone you have major work ahead of you of which dns is minor. You have a corrupt AD metadata since the w2k server was not properly removed from the AD database.

follow these instructions

If your right mouse click on your dns server in MMC what options do you see?
