Distributing WLAN further? (weak signal)

July 14, 2011 at 07:50:42
Specs: Windows Vista
We have rented a cabin for a few years, the landlord has given us his wlan password. Feel free to use it etc...
We may only get a usable connection in a corner of the living room, and I want to extend it to the next room.
I have an old router, SMC2804WBR available, may I use that?
How could I solve it.
No high speed, but enough to be here.

Generally speaking you can't install a router into a network that already has one, it can be done in theory but gets very complicated. The easiest fix is to install a Wireless Range Extender like this one: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Sho...

This response is SO wrong I don't even know where to begin.

Actually, it's quite easy if you know what you're doing.

A range extender isn't a bad idea.

Also, you could use point-to-point antenna's, outdoor AP's and bridges. Something like the following:

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

You can't.

That unit doesn't support wireless bridging as well as complicating things with a built in modem.

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.
How to properly post a question:

The WN2000RPT from NETGEAR are working now.
At approx 100 yds (meters) the position of the unit is sensitive. The speed is at least 100 kB. Not too fast. It should have external directional antenna but all antennas are integrated. Have put it in a plastic box outdoors for best function. A few inches in any direction makes poorer connection. Have used a couple of hours to locate the best spot for it.

---- But it does the job.
