detection of ip address through chatting

Specs: Windows XP, 1GB
I am using win-xp and google talk and orkut for chatting.Is it possible to detect the ip address of the person i m chatting with? I am not using any ip detecting software.

No you cannot. The only people that can do that is the chat host, Google talk in your case.

If you were to monitor the incoming packets from the Internet, and that is possible, the IP address it would show would be the IP address of Google Talk, not the IP address of the person you are talking too.

Every block of data transmitted over the Internet has both the source IP address and destination IP address.

You can get software to extract this information. However, the source address my not always be what you are expecting. Look up packet sniffers in Google

How come? Since packets will be containing the source and the destination IP, shouldn't you always be able to extract the source's IP? Or is it because it gets routed many times, orr like the example of google talk?
