Creating wireless from wired computer

Hi. My uncle has a wired router in his office building. The ethernet cord goes up from the router (which he does NOT have access to) to his desktop in his office. He has a laptop that has integrated wireless which he wants to use throughout the building. Looking for a small device, like a thumbdrive, that he can plug into his desktop to broadcast the internet to his laptop wirelessly. He wants to be able to plug it in and unplug from desktop when he's done. Remember, he has no access to the router so whatever needs to be connected has to go through the desktop.
Thanks!

Since this is a work environment I highly recommend your uncle talk to the powers that be before he goes ahead and does anything.

If he's allowed to, they'll be able to help him get setup. If not, checking in advance could very well save his job.

Most places of business take a dim view of employees starting up wireless networks without permission. Where I work, doing so would get you fired on the spot.

The fact that your uncle doesn't have access to the router makes me think he works in a place with a similar view towards employees taking matters into their own hands. It also tells me he's not on the IT staff (or he'd know whether or not it was allowed and whom to talk to about it) and definitely shouldn't be messing around with this stuff.

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

Thanks for your response, Curt. My uncle is a priest and this is in his rectory. I just didn't want to say that in the beginning because some people's opinions on priests can be mixed, so I didn't want this thread to be turned into a "bashing" thread. He is actually in charge there, and does have access to the router if he wanted to, but does not want to change anything on that side of the network. I know the device is available, but just not sure what its called.
