Bit more information would help.

What is the model number of the router?

Are you trying to connect via wireless or wired?

Have you read the instructions that came with the router?

What does ipconfig /all show?

To find out go to a command prompt and type ipconfig/all and post the results.

Forget what you were told and answer the questions.

You are going to need wires somewhere if only to get the Internet into the router. Unless you are using WiMax in which case knowing the router model number would be a big help.

Without some information as to the equipment you have and what type of Internet connection you have no one can answer your question. There are just to many variables.

Does the stand alone PC connect to the Internet?

Connect you computer the the router with the cable. Configure you network computer to Obtain IP address automatically. Make sure the LAN light on the router is lit and re-boot the computer.

Go to a command prompt and type ipconfig/all. Look at default gataty. The IP address should be 192.168.1.254. If not post the output form IPconfig so as I can see what is wrong.

If it is load up your browser and put in the address 102,168.1.254.
you will be prompted for a User name and Password. Username is Administrator. Password can be either Blank or Administrator. Try one or the other. That will put you into the configuration screen.

You then need to configure the router according the the manufactures instructions. You will need to enter the User name and password given to you by your ISP if not already done. Go into the wireless configuration screen and configure the wireless. Select WPA for and PSK for encryption. Enter the key you wish to use but done forget it as you will need to to connect the laptop.

Save you settings. Configure the Laptop to use the same encryption as the router and try to connect with the laptop and you will be prompted to enter the key. Enter the key you just entered into the router. It should now connect.
