Connect Virgin 50Mb Modem direct to switch

February 9, 2010 at 02:04:36
Specs: Windows Vista
I want to create a wired home network for
VoIP, Internet access and potentially some
home automation.
Can I simply connect the ethernet port on the
back of a VirginMedia 50Mb cable modem to
the one of the two Gigabit ports on a Netgear
switch (considering ProSafe FS750T2), then
start connecting up various devices (PCs,
VoIP phones, etc) to the ethernet ports on the
switch, or am I missing an essential bit of kit
in the middle(eg hub, router, etc.)?
Many thanks in advance.

Yes, you are missing an essential bit of a kit. A router.

Connect the Modem direct to the switch and all devices will be trying to use the same single IP address supplied by the Modem. That will never work.

A router will supply a different IP address to each device and that will work.
