Connect to lan through internet?

I have a lan that is managed by my router/modem. I was wondering, if I got a VoIP phone and connected it to my LAN, could I somehow set up the network so that when I'm out in the world and I have my PDA with me, if I come across a Wi-Fi hotspot, could I somehow use the PDA to connect to my network through the internet, and call the VoIP phone?

I'm a total noob when it comes to VPN and similar things like that but I'm guessing that's the sort of thing I'd have to setup?

You will need some software on your PDA as well as VPN server software on your home computer. It can be done, but it is not a trivial thing.

Having said that, a VoIP phone can normally be called through the normal GSM or POTS network. You don't absolutely have to be on the Internet to call a VoIP phone.

what would your pda do with a phone call? Does your pda have a mic?

concerning your question the easiest setup is to put in a vpn router like a linksys that contains vpn client software. You run the vpn software after you have made an internet connection to then connect to your network. Then you run something like RDP to connect to your pc at home.

Or you get and install any number of products to do this like logmein, hamachi, etc. Google search for them so you have a better understanding on how this works.
