Connect thru wifi and lan simultaneously

October 4, 2010 at 07:25:57
Specs: Mac OS X 10.6.4, 4GB
Is it possible to connect in the same router two different devices? One is thru WiFi connection and the other one is thru LAN cable.

Is it a viable option? Again, two separate devices are trying to connect to a single router in two different ways.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Miko

Dont Quote me on this, but,

If i remember rightly, you can't have wifi and LAN as one connection.

You can have a wifi and LAN connection going simultaneously, but it wont send one packet to the one and one packet to the other (Kinda like RAID 0) .

"two separate devices are trying to connect to a single router in two different ways."

Of course you can. They call it a wireless router. If you note you will see wifi as well as lan ports on the router. They can both be used at the same time by different devices.

@wanderer

So there will be no problem to the connection as to what kieron2k4 pointed above?

kieron2k4's advice would be true if you were connecting the same device to both router interfaces. This was not your question.

What lead you to think you couldn't do wired and wireless access, using different devices, to your router at the same time?

Well, I'm a bit noobish about these things that's why I was pretty not sure whether or not it's a viable option. At least now I can transfer to a new room here in my accommodation. I was worried because the wifi signal inside the room was low to zero connection and going wired is the only option.

Now to buy Apple Airport Express and a 20m LAN cable.

Thanks for the help and confirmation. Of all the forums I've posted this issue, I only got a concrete answer here.

Thanks again!

Why would you need a apple airport express when you are getting a cable?
