Computers dont see each other

September 21, 2010 at 17:04:47
Specs: Windows XP
This morning I had to remove power from my router. After I reconnected it my two computers that are connected to it by wire cannot see each other. The computers are both XP Pro. Each can see the router and the internet and have logical IP addresses assigned, but they cannot see each other.

Some facts:

I have powered down all three devices, repowered the router, given it time to linkup, then powered the two computers -- no help.

I've tried several ways of reaching the other computer. There are shortcuts on each machine that link to folders on the other machine. These don't work. I had mapped the other drive to a free drive letter -- that doesn't work. I have tried entering \\red in the Run box. I tried clicking on the drive in Network Places.

I can successfully ping either computer from the other by pinging the IP address.

The workgroup names are the same.

"File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks" is installed and enabled.

I use a Linksys WRT54GL router.

The other computer appears in the other computer's WorkGroup, but mine does not. My computer WorkGroup is entirely blank - my computer does not appear in it, nor does the other computer.

Edited to add:

The Windows firewall is disabled and I use no other firewall.

If there is a cable modem, that has to be shut down too & restarted first.

I hear what you are saying, but I think that would be if I weren't reaching the Internet. Both computers can reach the Internet, they just can't reach each other.

Might not be important but what is listed as DNS server when you run ipconfig /all in a commandprompt box on each PC ? The router's IP should be listed as gateway and is usually also listed in the DNS area.
