I strongly suggest to scan your laptop for viruses and trojans.

Windows gets stressed, when a program or service tries to access a network or the internet, and it's impossible because of any unavailability.
A well programmed software will give up after a timeout, but a virus is not part of well programmed software.

I suggest to use a bootable Antivirus Rescue CD.
The advantage is, that windows did not run at this time and also a virus did not run at this time, that might try to avoid virus scanning.
An already installed Antivirus software may possibly be infected too.

So e.g. go here:

download and burn Avira AntiVir Rescue System:

Start your laptop from this CD, click the update button, change the settings, if needed, and start scanning.

Let me first ask some further question.
Is there a second computer in your network, where you're using a shared folder from?
And if so, is this shared folder accessable the whole time?

I would first suggest to scan the computer, because sounds a bit odd to me.
When done this, we know for 99 percent, that there is no virus or trojan an can try to figure out, what else can cause this.

Such things can only be solved step by step.

Have you tried the Antivirus I suggested in Response #1?
This did not run under Windows.
It's a bootable live cd and really works great.
By using this cd, you shouldn't get any error.

At the first screen, you simply press the enter key.
The system now boots up from cd.
Then it checks for the hardware, used in your system.
When ready, at the left hand side, you have 3 buttons, Virus scanner, Configuration and Update.
So now, you first click the update button. Click Yes when asked to Update scanner.
Wait until you get the message "AntiVir successfully updated ifself".
Now click the Configuration button.
The "Scan mode" should be "Scan all files"
"Action at malware discovery" should be "Remove infected files" or "Try to repair infected files", just as you like.
The rest is ok so far.
Now click "Virus scanner", then click the "Start scanner".

When virus scanner has finished, click "Miscellenious" at the left side and choose "Shutdown", then click "Restart" and start your system from hard drive to your windows.

Hope this makes thing clear to you.
