Computer connects then connection goes dead

January 27, 2010 at 14:13:48
Specs: Windows XP, 5 years old
My computer broadband software will allow me to
connect to the internet and upon opening Internet
Explorer, will allow me to access one or two websites
before refusing to download any further. The browser
just continues to "download" the site, but clearly
nothing is being downloaded. If I disconnect and
reconnect, again, I can access a couple of sites only
for the same problem to occur again. I think this is a
problem with the connection rather than the computer
but the ISP maintain that the connection is fine. Can
anyone help?

run the connection software then go to a cmd prompt and type ipconfig /all. Post the results for review.

It would be nice to know how you arrive at that conclusion. The browser can't download anything is the connection has died. On the other hand if the connection is still there but nothing is being downloaded it is clearly a problem with your computer.

By "the browser continues to download", I mean the IE picture
in the top right corner is animated, but no page is downloaded.
This happens indefinitely rather than the browser telling me
there is no connection.
