Can't get wireless with Windows 98

March 11, 2011 at 10:56:55
Specs: Windows 98 - NOT SE
I have an old Windows 98 pc with no ethernet connection. I installed a net gear wireless card/adapter 802.11b. I changed my wireless settings to WEP - and even to none but still the Wireless LAN Configuration Utility (under link info) says "Disconnected". Tried using a USB port but the computer asked for a driver. I went online w/my laptop for the driver but now the PC no longer recognizes the USB when its inserted. I have even tried "find new hardware"..I just want to get online to upload some pictures that are stuck on the pc..Any ideas would be helpful...

I just want to get online to upload some pictures that are stuck on the pc..

Buy a USB memory stick and use it copy the files over to the computer you own that does connect to the internet.

I suspect you'll have nothing but trouble trying to get a wireless interface working properly on a windows 98 box.

I am the captain of my soul.

It is time to upgrade your Windows my friend. You are going to have no end of problems trying to find drivers for Windows 98. You could either get something off of e-bay that was made back then or install an Ethernet Card made back then and hookup a Wireless Gaming Adapter to it to get you connected to your wireless.

Thanks for the quick responses. Regarding the USB, I have tried two different ones. The first the computer doesn't recognize, the second needs a driver to be recognized. I thought I found the driver online but it was a zip file- I tried unzipping the file but the PC doesn't recognize it. The USB that the PC did recognize was a cruzer micro. As for the adapter & wireless card, I got them on ebay (brand new) and they support windows 95/B, 98, Me, NT, 2000 & XP. It is Netgear and my router is also Netgear. I don't intend to stay online or use this for long I just want to get baby pictures off the computer before technology changes so much it's too late (I wish I had thought of this earlier). I am also trying to use NetZero to dial-up but, although I was connected to NetZero (they have free dial-up) I couldn't get it to give me an internet page..
