Can't get my laptop to connect to secure acct

March 19, 2011 at 15:19:21
Specs: Windows XP
I bought a used HP nc6000 and can't get it to connect to my secured account. The router I have is a Linksys E1000. I know my laptop has the wireless card and it's working because I can log into my "guest" account but of course that's unsecured and I don't want to be using it. Especially when we do purchasing over the internet. My laptop shows my secured account and when I try to connect it just says "waiting for the network" and then times out.

I'm sure this is part of my problem and wnat to know if it can be fixed or not. The laptop shows WEP and the router is WPA or WPA2. Is there any way of making these work together.

If the laptop wireless NIC is only capable of WEP security encryption but the router uses a different ( higher WPA ) standard there are two options open to you.
1. step the router down to WEP ( Not ideal as WEP can be breached in less time that it took to write this response)
2. Get a new wireless NIC for the laptop ( USB Plug-in or pcmcia ) that is compatible with the higher encryption protocol

I actually did try to bring my router down to the WEP and still couldn't connect. Unless I needed to change something on the computer.

I will try to get a the NIC for the laptop. Do you know if they are very expensive? How do they work? I'm not the most up to date person on this type of thing.
