Solved can't connect my laptop to a wireless network

August 8, 2011 at 12:18:43
Specs: Windows XP
I have access to a wireless network, but when I try to connect my laptop to the network it says that it can not connect. And, of course, you can't troubleshoot it without a connection...I don't know if I accidentally changed my settings somehow or what, but I'd like to get the problem solved.

The only thing I can think of with regard to the computer not even connecting to the wireless network is that there is a problem with the wireless network interface.

I would suggest you check for updated drivers for your NIC (network interface) and if there are some available, download them and update your NIC.

If there aren't, the only other thing I can think of trying would be to uninstall the TCP/IP stack and reinstall it.

If neither of those fix your issue, you might want take it in to a reputable shop and have them look at it as it may be a hardware issue (ie: the NIC might be broken).

Is this a wireless network (WLAN) you've connected to successfully previously?

Are you getting any error messages or requests for username/password when you attempt to connect?'

Is your wireless interface set to get it's TCP/IP settings automatically (DHCP)?

Yes, I have previously connected. I have the password for the network, but it won't let me get to the point where it wants a password. When I click on the network and click connect it says "connecting" and then says that it can not connect.
And TCP/IP settings???? Way out of my league. Where would I look for that?
