Solved Cant access Noontec Gigalink N5 NAS remotely

July 1, 2012 at 03:03:22
Specs: Windows XP
Using a netgear router, windows xp and noontec n5 NAS, I can set up the n5 as a local network drive but, from a friend's house, I canot get to access the n5 remotely using urls such as :

ftp://nik@<EIP>.com

where nik is the N5 ftp folder name set up and <EIP> is the external ip address detected for the router. The n5 is sold without a user guide and their website has so far not allowed me to download one either.

Please could someone suggest what I am doing wrong ; or come up with a better approach.

Since your NAS is behind a router, you'll have to create a port forward on the router to the NAS device which will allow external connections to remote in.

Since you're using ftp, your forward would look as follows:

forward Port 21 to [LAN IP of NAS]

Star! Router needed setting to accept FTP Service. Can now see files loaded here in friend's house. But . . .

As yet, am unable to find means of uploading his files to my NAS. Will go browsing for a solution.

In meanwhile, thank you for your incredibly swift response.
