cannot connect to the Exchange serve via VPN

Specs: Windows XP
I cannot connect to the Exchange server from home via VPN. Outlook cannot establish connection, even re-creating my user profile in the mail settings did not work. I have noticed that Outlook & Internet Explorer stop working every time Outlook cannot connect to the server, When I connect from work it is working fine. What should I do? My local service desk does not have a clue. Thanks

yes the VPN is working ok. Other applications can be used like cisco and I can surf the web.
