Cannot connect to shared folder over network

Specs: Windows XP/Windows Vista

I'm facing a really frustrating problem, more so because it is occurring intermittently. I have a Windows XP machine at work (Comp 1). Therein I had a couple of shared folders, which I had mapped on my Windows Vista home premium laptop (Comp 2), without any problem for months.

The username/pwd to log on to both systems was different, and the Workgroup names were different. But there was never any problem until 2 days ago. I could connect to the mapped shared folders by entering my username/pwd of the Win XP system.

On Monday, I was no longer able to connect, receiving the following error message -

"Windows cannot access \\WinXP\shared_folder

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

Error Code: 0x80070005
Access is denied"

When I click on Diagnose, I get the message - "shared_folder is available but the user account you are logged on with was denied access"

I spent the whole Monday trying to fix this by doing almost every possible thing - having the same usernames and pwds on both systems, granting FULL CONTROL to EVERYONE on the shared folder, switching between IP address and hostname, and a gazillion other tips I could find online.

I was, and still am, able to see the shared folders in Explorer, but just not able to enter them. Suddenly I could enter a shared folder as soon as I increased the "Allow this number of users" in Sharing tab. But that was shortlived. Access got lost again quickly, only to be back to normal at the end of the day!

Whole tuesday there was no problem, as I could access all shared folders without doing anything extra! However, this morning, it again refuses to enter giving the same error message!

I have tried to access the folders from other computers, including Windows 7, with similar luck! There has been no change whatsoever in the network environment, IP addresses remain the same, etc.

Please advise me as to what could be acting bitchy, as I'm sick of dealing with this!

Thanks a ton

windows or 3rd party firewall set to allow file and printer sharing?
do you see the shares in the network when you browse?

@wanderer - Thanks for the reply! Yes no restrictions on firewall. Even had disabled the firewall to no avail. Shares & printers visible on the Network. Strangely but pleasantly, got the damn thing to work again by -
1) Deleting all current network connections by "net use * /delete"
2) Re-entering login credentials while re-mapping the shared folder

Have no idea why it should behave so, but the issue seems to be resolved for now!
