BT homehub wireless downloading speed issue

Specs: Win XP, 4gb
I am having problems with a wireless network. I have a BT Homehub v2 and i can download at about 7mb which whatever in kbits i don't know but it's not the full speed they advertise.

I can get full speed on my macbook but on my pc which is only the same distance away from the homehub i can only download at about the equivalent of 3-4 Mb which is quite a bit of difference.

I have a wireless network PCI adapter (Edup mini wireless adapter).

What is strange is all the other laptops in the house have no problems with download speed except my pc with that network card.

Is there any tweaks that I can use to increase download speed or could it be that the network card isn't sat on the slot properly or just need to get a better network card.

Earlier on it was so slow, it took 10 minutes to dowload a 10Mb file.

No tweaks, if it wasn't seated properly, it wouldn't work, period.

I doubt you need a "better" card, something isn't quite working properly with this one and it could be any number of things. Don't forget, wireless is always a little unreliable and slow and will never work exactly the same from one interface to another, especially when we're talking one make/model to another.

Check to ensure you have the most up-to-date drivers for the network interface. If you don't, upgrade them and see if that doesn't fix the issue.

Earlier on it was so slow, it took 10 minutes to dowload a 10Mb file.

I read this and caught myself trying to calculate how long it would take to download 10 Mb's at 1200 baud..........the speed of my first internal modem. If memory serves me, you're looking at something like 20 hours or more. You kids are spoiled........10 minutes for 10 MB's isn't what I'd call slow considering you're on a home class internet connection.

I would have downloaded the file on one of the "faster" computers and then tossed it across on the LAN to the "slow" one had it been me, and I was in a hurry.

i have had a fresh intall of XP to see if this was causing a problem and doing speed test i get 1.2Mb download instead of 7.5Mb as it should be.

I have used tweaks and make no difference. I have tested download speeds on my laptop which is right next to my pc and I get download speeds of about 5Mb up here. It seems to be faster when it's nearer the hub.

Why is there a differnece of about 4Mb download speed when they are right next to each other. My signal strength is very good but i wouldn't thought that would make much difference.
