Add/remove items from school network PCs

Specs: Windows XP
How do I audit a network PC to see what it has on it or delete what does not need to be there. If I do it through the Windows add or remove they re-install.
In the old days I could do it in DOS and then 'Tree' to list the properties and then delete what I wanted permanently. Any help much appreciated - School Tec (Thanks)

You don't describe your network setup. Workgroup/domain? Servers?

Clearly your site does not have GPO's or local policies restricting students from installing software. Talk about being behind the times. You must spend all your time repairing/disinfecting pcs.
