If the Sony laptop has a built-in wireless adapter, you don't need to buy anything.
Look in Device Manager and it will show you if it has a wireless adapter.

If the laptop does not have a built-in wireless adapter, you can buy one that plugs into a USB port. That's all you need to buy.

You might have an old pcmcia card slot, and you can also plug a wifi card into the slot.

something like this just as an example:

To err is human but to really screw things up, you need a computer!

I agree entirely with HopperRox that an internal card is by far the best option if at all possible. However it still might be possible to get a USB1 compatible adapter if necessary (see Google) but they would be slow. This covers the situation:

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
