When I check settings on Sype the computer is running too slowly. I have a Acer Aspire one notebook with Intel CPU 1.66GHz 512KB cache, 1GB memeory. I am in Portarlington using a Vodafone mobile internet connection. My hotmail is OK. In Essendon using Virgin internet connection, Skype works excellent. I have a Windows 7 starter pack. What can I do?
if it works with one carrier and not another its not the computer but the carrier. Answers are only as good as the information you provide.
How to properly post a question:
Wanderer is right.
You can run Skype on an old computer with 700 MHz without any problem.
What line speed do you have and does the line really provide the speed it should? The original poster should always write the last response !!!

Sorry for the late response. I appreciate the feedback. Problem not fixed.
I am in Portarlington using a Vodafone mobile internet connection, hotmail OK but Skype simply does not work.
In Essendon using Virgin internet connection, Does mobile connection make a difference?
Also how do I check out line speed.
"What line speed do you have and does the line really provide the speed it should?"
Thanks Gordon
Mobile Internet connections like UMTS are mostly slower than e.g. ADSL internet connections.
But there are differences in speed, also depending on the provider.
What exactly does not run on skype?
Video conferencing, or simply the chat?
Skype chat should be run smoothly on linespeed of 1Mbit/s.The original poster should always write the last response !!!

I cannot make a call
The green call button is light green and when you click on it nothing happens. After a minute a notice says that you have called the person however they did not answer.
Alternatively when it is bright green and when you click you get a line and it dials.
The check settings box has 2 orange bars and when you click on it 5 areas pop up.
The picture of the computer screen is also orange and says the computer is running slowly.
Thanks Gordon

For what it's worth I've just run a test on my Optus cable broadband and got the following results:
Download 18.78
Upload 0.49
Ping 11Your Vodafone service should be re-named Mobile skinnyband. It certainly doesn't meet my definition of broadband. Contact the provider. Either their modem is faulty or their service is severely limited.
Goin' Fishin' (Some day)
So as it seems to me, your line speed is:
Download: 768 kbit/s
Upload: 64 kbit/sThis might be the problem on using Skype for calls and even more video conferencing.
If the line at Vodafone (768/64) is what you pay for, it's not enough.
If the line speed at Vodafone should be higher, check the contract, you have to call Vodafone, to inform them about an failure on the line. The original poster should always write the last response !!!

I will visit Vodafone tomorrow and will post the response
Thank you
I recieved a standard response from Vodafone that answered many questions that i did not ask. Their Customer service is poor.
The answer included this passage amongst 20 Q&A.
What kind of download speeds should I expect from Vodafone Mobile Broadband?
In Vodafone’s 3G Mobile Broadband areas, typical download speeds range from 300kbps to 3.0Mbps. (burst speeds up to 6.0Mbps can be experienced in major metropolitan areas). Slower speeds can be expected in regional areas. In GPRS areas, you should expect downloads speeds between 20-30kbps. See vodafone.com.au/coverage for coverage details. Can I use P2P applications on Vodafone Mobile Broadband?
Yes, however the service has not been optimised for P2P usage and you may experience slower download/upload speeds.I think that means that I am stuffed
That's the deal with mobile broadband connections.
It can be fast, but mostly it's not.The original poster should always write the last response !!!

Sent a smartacre email back to Vodafone just to make me feel better, I don't expect a response or to resolve the issue.
Sype started working in Sydney this morning (unbelievable). I made and recieved 5 calls. Quality poor to average however ir worked. My mate has Telstra mobile which works Ok down at Portarlington. I will test and probably jump ship. $100 poorly spent with Vodafone but no dramas as it not the machine.
Just bought the notebook on a whim to replace an older laptop. Bad choice so I need to do some homework to get something a bit more powerful that will do the job anywhere, but I really like the size of this..
Thanks for your help and input. Appreciate it, Gordon
