You need a router connected to a modem to distribute the connection.

You either need ad-hoc wireless OR a RJ45 Ethernet cable between the 2 machines. On Windows 7 you need to enable Internet Connection Sharing:

I have a RJ45 ethernet cable forum the network with a hub. Set up ICS on the Win 7 laptop and set the ICS to sharing.
Under Network Connection, selected the connection I want to share and checked Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection check box.
On Configure TCP/IP do I set each network computer is configured to get an IP address automatically. If so, then the computers can't see each other.
The Windows 2000 machine does not have an IP4 and an IP6.
Followed the instructions as per internet options from the Win 7 help on the Windows 2000 machine.
Still can't connect on Win 2000 machine.
