10Mbps internet working but 100Mbps is not

Belkin Belkin n wireless router

Specs: Windows XP Pro SP2
I have a very strange problem with my internet. My basic setup is: A motorolla cable modem, and a Belkin F6D4230-4 WIreless N Router. The service 15Mbps down from Comcast.I also have tons of ethernet cables that are both store bought and home made ( my dad is an electrician)

The main problem is that the internet works in the 10Mbps (both half and full duplex) all the time. But only works in the 100 Mbps mode in a strange set of circumstances.
1) It ALWAYS works when connected to the modem directly w/o the router. 2) When the router is in use , it only works with a specific set of cables. From testing it looks like it works only for store bought cables, and not for the home-made ones.

What I mean by not working is that it either fails to get a network address (ie gets stuck on acquiring network adress) or says it has Limited or No Connectivity.
If anyone ever ran into a problem like this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure the cables you are using are cat5 or cat5e, I think anything lower doesn't support 100mbps ethernet.
