Windows 7 pc running Netware client 2 sp1 win

January 25, 2011 at 05:49:18
Specs: Windows 7
I have a Win 7 pc running Novell Client 2 sp1 win7 ir4 that when I configure it with a static ip and i try to login I receive the errror unable to find tree. When I set the pc to DHCP it will connect to the Novell server 6.5 with no problem. I have created an A record on my DNS server for the tree name with the Novell server ip. Can't under stand why it works one way and not the other. Need to set it up with static ip for legacy apps.

When you configured the Win7 client manually with a static ip address, did you also configure the default gateway and dns server in the ip settings?

Have you checked the output of ipconfig /all in both configurations and checked for differences?

Yes the Gateway and DNS settings have been filled in. I set this win7 box up the same as a xp with ip, gateway, sub mask, Prim DNS, and Alt DNS and it works fine, but with XP i'm using the Novell Client 4.91 SP5 for Windows client.
I checked the config /all and everything looks the same except for the DHCP and static.
What's the difference between Static and DHCP setup. Could it be looking for the tree in different ways?

No, it doesn't search for tree or server in a different way.
The DHCP server only gives the ip settings information automatically.
A DHCP server gives the client PCs these ip configuration values by default:
IP-Address and Netmask
Default gateway
Nameserver
Proxy-configuration via WPAD
Time and NTP server
DNS server, DNS context and DNS tree
WINS-server

But you will need to configure only these values on manual configuration:
IP address (IP)
Netmask
Default gateway (IP)
DNS server (IP)

What's about the windows 7 firewall?
Have you tried to disable the windows firewall just for testing purpose?

Is TCP/IP configured at the Novell Server?
Windows 7 has no IPX anymore.
So you must have configured and bound TCP/IP to the network card at the server.

Yes TCP is configured to the card. I noticed in the win7 network properties that there are two ip configs ip4 andip 6 , could there be a conftict with setting one up as static and the other automatic. We only have ip4 set up on aour private network.

No conflict on IPv4 and IPv6.
If you setup IPv4 statically, it should work.
If on static ip, can you ping the server or something like google.com?
