mac-user accounts on a Novell network?

Specs: Macintosh
I work in a college that uses a novell network, we've recently added a suite of imacs and are using netware to allow the students to access the network. Ideally we'd like to assign individual students a single workstation so that they can take advantage of the i-life software/bookmarking etc. The IT department say that it's not possible to create a user account for each student whilst employing the netware software. We have only approx 150 students and 20 imacs, The imacs were bought with much resistance from the IT department and I get the feeling that they want to prove that the investment was a waste of money, We are receiving little or no dedicated support and feel we need to side-step them or be ready with some answers/ suggestions if they deem to meet with the lecturers that use the suite.
Does anybody have any hard and fast knowledge or experience of this?

Depends on which netware version is running and which protocols are used in your network environment.
If IPX protocol is also used in your environment, users can be restricted to a special MAC address. So the user is restricted to this special network card.

In an TCP/IP only environment, you need additional software running on novell netware. It's called ZenWorks (full Version, not Starter Pack). There you can create policies, to restrict users to specified hardware.
