Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 3.013 GHz / 1791 MB
For many years I have been running Netware 3.12 on a MSDOS server with clients on several machines including windows98 and xp professional.
Recently I lost the mother board on a PC with xp professional and can find no client installation disc.
I now have a new PC running xp professional
I have dowloaded and installed a new novell client 4.91 sp2 english. Attempting to log in using this
client I receive the Novell Security Message
"Tree or server cannot be found. Choose a
different tree or server". Should this configuration
work? If so, what do I need to do?
I also have copied the Novell folder from the
PC running Windows 98 but I cannot figure out
how to cause this software to install.

You have to choose bindery login at the novell client login screen, by clicking the advanced button and choose bindery.
If bindery is not found at the novell login screen, login to the local machine and rightclick the Red N in systray, choose Novell Client Properties, click Location Profile.
In the Location Profile windows, there is a default profile. Mark the default entry and click properties. In the upcoming window click properties again.
Now you get a screen that looks like the Novell Client login screen.
Click on the Bindery Tab and activate "Active Authenticator". In the server field, put in the servers name. Then click ok til all windows are closed.
Then give it a try.

I was able to access the location profile on the task bar
to load the server in the bindery tab and it is now
visible in the properties of the Novell login window.
Unfortunately, I still receive the same error message.
"Tree or server cannot be found. Choose a
different tree or server" even after a reboot of both
the PC and the router. My other PC with Windows 98
also attached to the router can still find and log into the server. Thank you for your help but I need some further
advice?

Holy crap! People still use Novell NetWare? I still have the disks, but haven't used them in, like, 9 years.

Sometimes what works is better than what is
new and does not work! What worked well 15 years
ago still works well!

@nnvincent
Netware really works well and is more secure than Windows Server.
Try to put a Microsoft Windows Server in the internet and do the same with a Netware Server.

The Netware Server runs and runs while the Microsoft Server gets mostly hacked in a few hours.

@lenclarke
Tried installing Novell Client v4.91 onto an XP virtual machine with only Bindery option enabled, but the same result. "Tree or server cannot be found".

Also searching the Novell knowledge base brought no solution.

You might take a look by yourself at

Good luck.
