A standard OS X Tiger install will not read and write NTFS partitions. There are ways to get this to work; see, for example, this article. But be careful, because this is not officially supported by Apple.

If the disk is only for use with the Mac I would repartition and reformat it as a Mac OS Extended format, using the DiskUtility.

In that case you will have to follow the procedure outlined in the article I linked to. As always when doing things that are not supported by the manufacturer, make sure that you have copies elsewhere of any important data stored on this disk. In all likelihood nothing will go wrong, but it's only sensible to make provision for this possibility.
