Solved Use my house wifi to metal barn

July 11, 2016 at 08:06:41
Specs: Mac desktop
My home wifi is less than 200 ft from my metal barn. I ran a phone line to the barn when built so I have the same phone in both places is there a way to use my wifi from the house through the same phone Line??

Point to point wifi antennas would do the trick and with a little bit of research, you could find a pair of affordable ones to do the job. I like eNgenius products and would likely use theirs if I needed to do the same thing.

I think you should look at pulling a cat 5e or 6 cable from house to building using the same method you used for the phone line. If you can, then that fixes the problem rather inexpensively right there.

Wifi might prove tricky but Power Line adapters (which use Ethernet via domestic power) have possibilities. See here:

or here:

I've found quite inexpensive ones work very well. Google HomePlug or PowerLine from your own location.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Where can I buy two of these plugs? Would I use one in my home and the other in my metal barn? What other items would I buy? There must be something I plug into each to attach them to my computer and or modem

Shoot, I watched a video on this and my metal barn and my house don't use the same electric lines, each bldg has its own electric bills, we only ran the phone line from the house to the metal barn. Is there a way thay I can use my internet service form my house to the metal barn? Thanks

Since the two locations are not on the same mains distribution (fuse boxes...) highly unlikely home plug/power line adapters will work.

As you managed you run a phone between the two locations... you might use the same method to run a cat-5/ethernet cable the same way. Use outdoor cable; or install within a conduit. How did you run the phone line?

If using cat-5/ethernet cable - connect main router to one end of the cable; the other end into a second wifi/ethernet capable router (rather than a simple wifi extender). The second router would be configured to work into/from the main router; and allow both ethernet and wifi options.

Other option is directional antennae; and I would defer to others here with more knowledge and experience with that approach. CurtR is one who has such experience...; and has recently detailed this approach for at least one other poster here.

Agreed that in the circumstances now described it is unlikely the adapters would work.

Just for future reference (as you asked) this is how you set them up:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-thin...
Two adapters with short cables is all you need to add one device (one at the router, the other on the device). Any additional device needs a further adapter.
