Solved TRYING TO REMOVE ALEXA from toolbar

January 28, 2012 at 09:48:27
Specs: Macintosh
Does work on a mac? I have been trying to get rid of the alexa bar which comes up automatically as my search engine. I really don't want it and thought i had deleted all of the alexa functions. I did a search on the net and saw this:

1. Type ‘about:config‘ and press enter.

2. You’ll see a warning page, click “I’ll be careful, I promise!”

3. Type ‘keyword.URL‘ in the filter text field.

You’ll notice the value is set to redirect to Alexa’s Search Engine.

3. Just double click the value field and put this in the popup box that appears:

This will make the Google as the default search engine for Firefox whenever you search through the address bar.

unfortunately it doesn't work for me and i've tried it several times. The alexa search is still there.

Any help would be gratefully received.

sorry not to have responded before to say thanks for your help. I think i must not have been very clear in my question because i did want to remove the search function which stayed after i had moved the actual toolbar - not sure why but i found the text in my original message on the internet in response to someone else with the same problem, but when i tried it on my Mac it wouldn't work. The link you sent seems to deal only with PC systems, not Mac, but in any case i no longer have the toolbar. It was just the search i needed to eliminate.
Many thanks though for sending the links
