I have an external hard drive which is formatted for a PC, and I want to transfer the files on it to my new Macbook. Can I do this?

Absolutely!
Plug it in with a ethernet, USB or Firewire connection, wait for your OSX system to read, configure or recognize the device, pick your files and you are done. With USB and FW you just need to wait seconds but with ethernet if you are using a PC you need to allow OSX to communicate and establish the connection and this usually takes a few minutes. When you have troubles is reading files with a Mac formatted disk from a PC.

You will find a additional file inside every folder and you can safely erase it every time.
