I dont know much about Macs, but when I replaced the drive in my G3 formatting it in a PC then putting it in the mac and re-installing the OS worked fine. It is a pain in the ass, but if your having HDD problems it might be worth upgrading the HDD to a newer more reliable one. I put in a Western Digital 80GB in my G3 and its much faster and much quieter! The old Quantum branded drives are loud.

Disk First Aid is a basic first aid tool from Apple, but not a very good one.

Acquire a copy of "Norton Utilities 5.0" and run a scan on the HD. Cancel scanning of all the files individually, and cancel the media checking if you want too, but let the file system scan run it's course.

Placing a HD in a PC and formatting it will not solve your issues, unless you want to re-format it again once you re-install it in the G3. If you want to format the HD, boot off a system CD and run Disk Setup (drive setup?) and just to be on the safe side, check the option to zero fill the drive. Zero filling tends to free up stuck bits on the HD that would otherwise be labeled as bad by just performing a format alone.

I found out something. Its not just the HDD,but also it has a problem with the motherboard. It turns on an off randomly.Once i was in bed at 1.00 in the morning, and it chose to turn on at that time and wake me up.

The random power up at night could be a setting under "power options" in the "System Preferences."

It sounds as if you need a new harddrive.
