retrieving photos from timemachine

Specs: Macintosh 10.5.8, 1 GHz/1GB
Earlier this year I installed leopard on my 1.25GHz emac and I used time machine to backup all files etc. The emac became very sluggish in operation and when going from one application to the next so I decided to do a clean install of Leopard on it. Before I did I made sure everything was backed up on time machine(external hard drive). Since the clean installation of leopard the machine is running faster (less data on the hard drive) But I am having trouble recovering data on my timemachine e.g it wouldn't let me get into my pictures folder saying I didn't have access priveleges......and when I finally did get in to the folder it said the iphoto library was locked...
I hope I haven't lost all my photos since before I did the clean installation of leopard, hopefully they are there somewhere on the time machine drive. Could you please shed some light on this situation for me.
