First of all, thanks for posting on the Computing.net Mac forum and welcome! :)

The symptoms described sound like a rogue add-on that you really shouldn't have installed. You will need to start Firefox in "safe mode", which sadly is done a little harder than in Windows, requiring Terminal for just a split second. :)

Switch to the Finder. You can best do this by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock (the band of icons on the bottom of the screen by default) or your desktop picture. In the menubar spanning the top of the screen, open Go and click Utilities. Scroll down and open Terminal. Type in the part in bold: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode then press return.

Now, Firefox should start in Safe Mode--which means your add-ons should be disabled. Go to the Tools menu, and click Add-ons. Find Foxtab, and remove it, even if Firefox is telling you it is disabled because you're running in Safe Mode right now. If Firefox prompts you to restart, please don't. Instead, close that window and quit Firefox. Then, type exit in Terminal. Quit Terminal. Because I wanted Firefox to close down properly, this is why we didn't just restart it.

Now, I would advise that if this plugin did cause that much trouble, it just might be wise to open Safari, download a new copy of Firefox, and drag the new one from inside the disk image to the Applications folder. If you believe this is unnecessary, however, go to Applications in the sidebar of the Utilities window you just opened, and open Firefox again with no worries.

Thank you for posting. It's honestly been a pleasure assisting you today. :)
