This is actually going to be a very short answer--you will need to convert the files to Word format from Office on a PC to .doc format, which is the default save format for Office 2003 and earlier. Office 2007 will save in a newer XML hybrid format, .docx. You can change this by saving it as a .doc file, which all Macs can open with TextEdit that ship with OS X 10.3 "Panther" or later.
