Specs: Mac G5, dual1.8 cpu 3g ram
I turned on my older g5 tower yesterday and found the firewire ports not working.
The usb ports are working fine but my main recording interface and one of my
external harddrives is firewire only.
what could be the issue?

Mac G5 dual1.8 cpu 3g ram osx10.4.11

Make sure the Firewire driver is loaded. I'm a Windows man so I've no idea how you check drivers on a Mac, but that's definitely a possible reason why Firewire isn't working.

If not the driver, then the internal Firewire hardware may be faulty.

Have a look at this thread:

Could be a physical problem, or it could just need an SMU reset.

Thanks ijack.
I pulled the ac plug in the back and waited 20 min. then plugged it back in and held the start button till it chimed then typed in the suggested command "re-boot", restarted the the normal way and wa la (don't do French) my firewire is back.
Not sure this is the final fix but it's working now.
