my photosmart 7960 is no longer recognized by IMAC OS 10 5.8

Specs: IMAC OS 10 5.8, 1.25 GHz/167 MHz
My HP photosmart 7960 stopped working after I tried to get it to read a new memory card. It wouldn't read it so I tried troubleshooting. I tried updating my printer software online and realized my computer wouldn't support it so I uninstalled it. Somewhere in this process the printer option for the 7960 went away and every time I try to print from ANY program , the program crashes! I have tried every combination of unplugging the printer and restarting, but there is no driver available on my computer. Th printer isn't even showing up as being plugged in to the USB port. It turns on (it actually won't turn off unless unplugged.) and prints test pages..etc. It seems to be working fine by itself, my mac just won't recognize it. I tried to plug it into a Powerbook G4 and it's not recognized there either. (All ports on both computers work fine.) I tried to download a driver from HP , but it says that there is no need to do so on my type of computer because it will just find the printer, but there is not one available!
I tried to add a printer, but it is not on the list! Please help!!!

Either you have a knackered printer or damaged USB Cable.

If the printer is not recognized, I can not see what a driver would achieve....
