I (actually Grandpa) just bought a MacBook Pro for my daughter who is going off to college.

The guy at the 800 Apple number told me about LoJack for laptops and mentioned that you can get 4 years of coverage at the 3 year price of $99 - "a 4 year academic discount".

He doesn't actually sell the product or get comissions anyway, so there was no pressure to buy it from him...he just thought it was something I should look into.

I know that a stolen laptop would be covered under my homeowner's insurance as long as she is living in the dorms, but all I would get is cash if I put in a claim.

LoJack claims that they can:

"Get your stolen computer back. Our dedicated Theft Recovery Team works with local law enforcement to recover your stolen laptop and return it to you.

If we don't recover your stolen computer or enable Data Delete, you could be eligible for a Service Guarantee payment of up to $1000*.
*certain conditions apply"

The video at the website shows a user logging into Lojack locating his own laptop and picking it up at the coffee shop where he left it. Cute.

I'm looking for opinions as to whether you think the LoJack product is worth the $99 that it would cost me (actually Grandpa) on the chance that the laptop would actually be recovered.

Does anyone have any experience with LoJack on a laptop?

it is insurance and I have had a friend who was able to recover his laptop but it usually involves the police and if they are really busy they will have more important things to do. I always recommend backing up her data on an external drive daily so the data is easily and timely recovered. this puts her data in here control at not at the option of a company and the police.
