This is kind of a double problem that goes hand-in-hand.

My friend has an iMac that for some reason won't run local Java programs. It seems to be running in his Browser OK, though.

Consequently, in the normal process of covering the bases, I asked him to update the Java. He said he still had 1.6. I sort of facepalmed at this, and told him to update right away. Turns out he can't, because his OSX won't update for some reason from 10.6.8. He 'said' he tried Apple support, and they couldn't help him.

Be aware that he currently lives across the country, so working on it directly isn't possible. He's also not very advanced at the higher-level stuff, and considering that I've never worked on Mac's before I'll probably need a step-by-step too.

Go ahead and start below.

Try to uninstall it and install the latest version

Can't, because the latest Java requires OSX 10.7.3 and up. He's stuck with 10.6.8.

And I tried having him reinstall J6 U17, but it didn't help.
