Welcome to the Mac section of Computing.net! :)

Steps you may be able to take to resolve this problem:

1) Restart the computer.

2) Repair disk permissions. To do this, open Spotlight on the very top, right hand corner of the screen. It will appear like a magnifying glass either by itself or inside a bubble. Type in Disk Utility and click it to open it. Click your hard disk. Click "Repair Permissions" and wait for it to complete. Restart the computer to ensure changes are applied, even though they generally will take effect immediately.

3) After completing steps 1 & 2, open Disk Utility and plug in your external disk.

a) If it shows up on the Desktop in the Finder and you can open the files on it, congratulations, you're done! Close Disk Utility.

b) If not, the drive should show up in Disk Utility. Click it and tell Disk Utility to repair the disk. In the toolbar, when you are finished, click Mount.

c) If the drive does not show up in Disk Utility or the Finder, in this case, you have a problem with either the disk itself or another problem, such as a dead port or misbehaving extension.

I hope you found this helpful. It was a pleasure assisting you today.
