Solved I can't connect my Mac to LaserWriter printer

July 16, 2011 at 15:25:23
Specs: Macintosh OS X 10.6.8
I have an older Mac Book laptop and a very old (pre-USB port) but wonderful LaserWriter Select 360, a great printer. My son was able to buy a cable and somehow he went on-line and managed to get my printer to work. On the print screen it comes up as "Prolific Technology, Inc.-IEEE-1284 Controller." When I bought the new iMac, the Apple Store did a data transfer but couldn't help me with the printer issue. They thought it might work if I just plugged the cord in and tried to print, but it didn't. It tells me I need to download software from the printer. My son is super busy and can no longer remember how he got the printer to print through the Mac Book. I have googled Prolific Technology and can't make heads or tails out of what software I need to download. Nothing seems to match. They have a phone number but are in Shanghai so I've been hesitant to call them.

According to this site (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669) The laserwriter select 360 should work

with Mac OS 10.6 (also with 10.5) via the included driver in the OS. So should not be any need to

install any special drivers.

The only thing that would scare me with this is the IEEE 1284 (Parallel port) connection...if you have a Parallel to USB adapter this should work, but I wonder if Mac OS X is choking on that? If you do have an adaptor, maybe you can post your manufacturer and model number and I can take a look as ensure that THAT is compatible with 10.5 or 6.

Thank you very much for your reply. I was actually able to get help through Apple support since my new computer is covered by their One-to-One plan. I should have have gone there in the first place, but they had been so unhelpful before. Anyway, it turned out to be fairly easy once the tech guy talked me through it. So now I'm back in business. Thanks again!

Hi, steveng, I ended up calling the Mac tech help number, and a very helpful tech person talked me through it. But that was months ago, and now I can't honestly remember what he told me to do. It worked, though! I hope this is helpful.
