Ccleaner for Mac ought to be all you need to clear out junk etc...; it does all that's required, and system will be somewhat improved. There are free and paid for versions; logically get the freebie...

Remember to check for upgrades/updates regularly... as things can change a little...

Other item is of course to add more RAM; max out if possible...

Remember that with SSD you do not need to defrag...; and installing an SSD in place of the original mechanical drive will make "quite a difference" in performance too.

It's relatively simple to clone the olde drive to an SSD...; after- which you simply power down, remove the base cover of the Macbook; remove or disconnect the battery too. Then swap the drives... If you need more on this last item - post back for a link to excellent how to in that regard; and a few useful tips based on my own experience. You "will" need the correct screwdrivers... which are not hard to find.
