I asume you know why you are setting the IP address. So I will skip this an go to the setting itself.

Go to "System Preferences". Is the silver icon with the gears on your duck and click-open the app.

Go to "Internet and Wireless" and you will need to select "Manually" in "Configure IPv4.

But if you are not sure of what you are doing OSX will connect to any network on its own. Leave the settings to "Using DHCP" connect your Mac to what ever network and wait for it to auto-configure. It may take minutes but it will connect to the network or other machine.

Also, go to "Search" on the "Help" menu and type "connecting a Mac to a network" or something simmilar.
