how to open files compressed with winzip

Specs: Macintosh
when i recieve files i cannot open them because they are compressed, only on my mac. How do I open these files and get rid of winzip

Hello and welcome to the Mac forum! :)

I have great news in this scenario: Windows XP, Vista, and 7 *all* allow you to right-click the file, and click "Extract all..." and Windows will unzip the file the Mac zipped up for you! (This only applies with .zip, however.)

Note that for .tar.gz files, and other really cool formats, 7Zip is the answer on Windows--OS X can handle these natively, as you have discovered. Unlike the annoying software WinZip, 7-Zip is not only free but open source, plus it is very small, and easy to install. Here is the link to the project: 7-Zip Website.
