How do I make sure my verbatim hard drive has backed up everything from my apple MacBook? I have backed up and gone back to check the hard drive to ensure my photos (from iPhoto's) and all my files have been backed up on the external HD however I can't find them and when I click on files that I think may include my photos I get a pop telling me I can't open the application "iPhoto" because it is in a time machine back up.

When you do a backup on a mac with Time Machine, it creates an Image of your hard drive which can't be opened because it it isn't viewable. It doesn't contain any executable programs etc. It's a compressed image so to speak. It's not meant to view, it's meant for restoring your Mac to the exact moment you made the backup of the entire drive. If you're worried about individual data like your pictures, you should burn them to a dvd or cd. If your hard drive ever crashes (internal or external) You'll be out of luck when it comes to recovering them. Time Machine backs up the entire computer, so if you used it to do a backup, it's all there. Hope this helps.
