How do I know if my browser has been hijacked. I am using firefox, but safari is still loaded on my mac computer does this cause a problem?

It doesn't matter how many web browsers you install. Most people have at least two in case one stops working, or one may be better for some things.

Also, if one stops working you can still get on the net with the other one to find a fix for or re-install the broken one.

A browser hijack causes your search engine to change, or when you try to use your preferred search engine (eg Google) the hijack will keep re-directing you to a different website.

Good third-party firewall & anti-spyware/anti-virus will prevent that as long as you keep them up to date.
