ghost files on my external hard drive

Specs: Macintosh
I have a seagate 500 gb external hard drive I use to back up my computer with apple time machine. I have used it for 2 years with out any problems. I tried to back up my computer, it tells me there is not enough space on the drive to back things up. I went into the hard drive and deleted everything off of it. It does not show any thing on the hard drive when I open it but it still say's there is only 126 gb available. Why can I not see what is in the hard drive and how do I get it off?

I don't know what is taking up the space, but it may be easier to just reformat the drive as you have deleted everything off it.

I'm not too sure about this, but check the trash for the supposedly *deleted* files. They might still be there. This happened to me before. Hope this helps.
