eMac frozen at the start up screen

Specs: Linux i686
I did a systems update on my eMac and it froze so I restarted it and now it is frozen at the Apple logo and the progress wheel. Help

The problem occurs because you might had installed a new hardware.The system shuts down or freezes unexpectedly due to operating system crash or power failure.

Go through the following steps to work around this problem:

• Disconnect all cables and try PRAM reset or Firmware reset.

• Remove the newly installed hardware and boot the system.

• In case of damaged system data structures, perform Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X operating system.

However, reinstalling the operating system removes all the data from your Mac hard drive and cause serious data loss.
