Convert to use as external HD exclusively

I have a few questions here. I am currently using my 320 gig WD BACKUP drive with time machine on my MacBook.
I would like to know if it is possible to convert this for use as just an external hard drive I can simply store files on, and how I would go about doing this, because as of now it only works as a backup.

I'm also looking for some alternatives to the Time Machine software that I could use with my drive if/when I can convert it to work how I want, because I do not like the fact that it does almost constant back ups and just fills up the disk when its not necessary. I would like software with better settings that I could set to back up like once a week.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I would ask this question in the Mac forum, as this is really an Apple issue. I know there is some third party backup software, but I have no idea what is the best for you to use.

thanks, but I'm more concerned about the converting my backup drive to just an external hard drive. Can it be wiped clean of EVERYTHING including software and be reformatted to just work as a drive?

Why not? Just select it and format it. Install OS-X and be done with it.

50gb SCSI
ATi 9200 PCI
