Change Administrator on a mac

December 22, 2010 at 11:37:19
Specs: Macintosh snow leopard
I want to give my mac pro to my wife and make her administrator. I also would like to remove all my data, but not programs, so she would have a clean computer.

To answer your question quickly, you will need to follow a few guidelines, which will be covered in two parts for you:

Part 1: Make a new account

1) Open the Apple menu from the menubar on the top of the screen and click "System Preferences..."
2) In the System category, click "Accounts".
3) In the left pane, you will see several user accounts. In the bottom of the System Preferences window, click the lock icon to authenticate. Type your password and click OK.
4) Below the accounts list pane, click the + button.
5) Type in the new user's name, press tab, and you will notice OS X will fill in the shortname for you. Press tab again, unless you want to change it. It's recommended to leave it at the default shortname.
6) If you want to, type in a password for the new account. If not, leave the "Password", "Verify", and "Password Hint" fields blank.
7) Check "Allow user to administer this computer" if you want to make the new user an administrator.
8) Click Create Account. If you did not provide a password, click OK in the dialog that appears.

---------------------------------------------------------

Part 2: Delete the old account

1) Logout of your account by pressing Command+Option+Shift+Q. Or, you can open the Apple menu, click Log Out <username>... and Logout again, (where <username> is your name.)
2) Log in to your new account. Do not change anything, but go directly to the Apple menu, open System Preferences, and in Hardware, find Accounts again.
3) Click the lock icon to authenticate. If you didn't assign a password, click OK to this window. If you did, you'll need to enter it, then click OK.
4) Click your account under "Other Accounts" in the accounts list pane, and below the accounts list pane, click the - button.
5) A sheet will roll out of the Accounts preference pane. It will ask if you want to keep your old data and files, or if you want to delete it (which you want to do).
6) Click "Delete Immediately".

Congratulations! You're done.

I hope your question was answered quickly and to your satisfaction.
